About the print

The story behind this print

Buddha figures are a familiar subject across Buddhist art, appearing in temples, shrines, sculpture and painting throughout much of Asia. This print keeps that recognisable profile and composed expression, but replaces a conventional decorative surround with a crown of pink and white Galsang flowers.

Galsang, also written Kelsang or Gesang, is a Tibetan name associated with the hardy wildflowers of the Tibetan Plateau. It does not refer consistently to a single botanical species, but the flowers are widely linked with happiness, good times and auspiciousness in Tibetan culture. Here, that real regional reference becomes part of the decoration, bringing colour and a distinctly Tibetan detail to a familiar Buddhist subject.
