About the print

The story behind this print

Umibōzu is a maritime yōkai found in stories from fishing communities around Japan. The name means roughly “sea monk”, and accounts often describe a huge dark head or monk-like figure rising suddenly from the water, blocking boats or appearing when the sea changes without warning.

The details vary by region, which is typical of folklore passed between coastal communities. In one well-known story type, the creature asks sailors for a ladle and then uses it to fill the boat with seawater; the escape is to hand over a ladle with no bottom. These stories turn the uncertainty of being offshore into a character with a face and behaviour. That makes Umibōzu a particularly maritime kind of Japanese folklore rather than a generic sea monster.
