Italian Octopus & Lemon Food Print

Octopus is a familiar ingredient in coastal Italian cooking, particularly in the south where fishing traditions and simple seafood dishes are closely tied to the Mediterranean. It may be boiled until tender and served in salads, sliced with potatoes, or dressed simply with olive oil, parsley and lemon rather than hidden under a heavy sauce.

Lemon works especially well with seafood because its acidity cuts through olive oil and the richness of the flesh. Around southern Italy, citrus is also part of the landscape itself, from Campanian terraces to Sicilian groves. The pairing therefore comes from the kitchen as much as from colour or decoration. Octopus and lemon belong together because they meet repeatedly on actual Italian plates, especially in warm-weather coastal cooking.
