About the print

The story behind this print

A chip butty is one of those English foods that barely needs a recipe: hot chips packed into buttered bread or a soft roll, usually with salt and vinegar and, depending on the person, ketchup or brown sauce. The name uses “butty”, a familiar word for a sandwich in parts of England, especially the North, which is why it feels more at home in a café, chippy or kitchen than on a formal menu.

The classic version is deliberately simple. The heat from the chips melts the butter, the bread squashes around them, and the whole thing is eaten straight away while the chips are still hot. It is cheap, filling and deeply ordinary — exactly the kind of everyday comfort food that can slip from attention without ever really disappearing from English food culture. That makes the chip butty a very CITTRA sort of print.
