About the print

The story behind this print

In Portugal, the andorinha — swallow — became a familiar domestic motif through ceramic birds made to sit directly on walls. Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro modelled ceramic swallows in 1891; some still hang from the ceiling of Lisbon’s Tabacaria Mónaco, while versions later spread to façades, balconies and interiors across the country.

Migratory swallows return in spring and often reuse familiar nesting sites, helping the bird become closely associated in Portugal with homecoming and attachment to home. Over the twentieth century, ceramic andorinhas became a familiar part of Portuguese decorative craft, appearing singly or in small flocks. Paired with Portugal’s equally recognisable azulejo tradition, the subject brings together two details repeatedly encountered in Portuguese homes and streets.
