About the print

The story behind this print

Pastel de nata is one of Portugal’s most familiar everyday pastries: a small custard tart with flaky pastry and a browned, slightly blistered top. You find them in cafés, bakeries and pastry shops across the country, while Pastéis de Belém in Lisbon is particularly well known for its own version and the long queues that regularly form outside.

They are commonly eaten with coffee and often dusted with cinnamon or icing sugar, making them as much a casual café order as something visitors actively seek out. That combination of ordinary daily habit and strong association with Portugal gives the pastel de nata a natural place within a CITTRA print built around recognisable Portuguese subjects.
